The Floating Islands of the Uros
people are the Puno area's major attraction. The lives of
the Uros are totally interwoven with the totora reeds
that grow abundantly in the shallows of Lake Titicaca. These
reeds are harvested and
used to make everything from the islands themselves, to the
boats and huts of the Uros people. Handicrafts made from
these reeds provide a livelihood via the tourist for the
local population.
