Internship

What an experience!

INTERNSHIP OPTIONS

(1) Internship (work at an agency for the semester)
(2) FLEX Internship (for criminal justice professionals with at least 3 years experience currently working in the field)
(3) Research Internship (as a research assistant with a professor of your choice who has approved your assistance)

Your internship experience is one of the most rewarding experiences that you will ever have as you complete your Justice Studies Degree. Learning outside of the classroom is an essential component of your education and one way this opportunity is afforded is through our internship program. The internship will allow you the opportunity to apply the wealth of knowledge that you have gained from taking courses in the Justice Studies program. The internship is a time of praxis, which is the combining of theory and practice. The agencies in which you will be interning, have agreed to offer very rewarding experiences by allowing you, the student, to participate in such a manner, that it would be difficult to distinguish the intern from actual employees. This means that the intern will get hands- on experience(s) that will assist the student in deciding whether or not to pursue a career in that particular area of criminal justice.

Now that you have a basic overview of the internship program, how about a few guidelines that will make the initial stage of setting up an internship proceed in an effective and timely manner. The basic guidelines are as follows:

  1. Contact the internship coordinator at least ten weeks before you desire to actually start your internship.  Please call Ms. Annette Kemler at 239-590- 7821 to set up an appointment.
  2. Have an idea of the area in which you would like to intern. The choices are basically law enforcement, courts, or corrections.
  3. Have a prepared, updated resume at the time of starting this process. This will expedite the application process for most agencies.
  4. Have an idea of your availability during the internship time frame. Know if days or evenings are best for your schedule. This information will help in finding an agency to meet your needs.
  5. Display patience as this process takes time and sometimes get slowed by unforeseen circumstances with the host agency.

The above serve as basic but effective guidelines that will start your internship experience off in the right direction. One last word of advice is to enjoy your experience and learn as much as possible.
